The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is

The opening day of the Bhadva mela at Ramdevra, which was Runicha, in Jaisalmer district. Baba Ramdev was a Tanwar Rajput of the fifteenth century who is held to be an incarnation of Vishnu, who ate with the Meghwal households of the desert when nobody else would, and who took a living samadhi at Runicha on the Shukla Ekadashi after announcing the fair himself. Walkers come for days across the Marwar sand carrying the neja, the flag that is planted at the samadhi, and the Kamad women dance the terah tali with manjiras tied to their limbs through the nights of it.

The hour

Clock times for Thursday, 2 September 2027 at Chennai

Bhadrapada Shukla Dwitiya at sunrise, the Beej, which opens the fair; it runs from here to the Shukla Ekadashi, the day of the samadhi.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise05:58the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 05:58, sunset 18:19, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast. The bhandaras along the padyatra roads feed the walkers, and the offering at the shrine is a coconut and sweets.

Where the regions differ

Rajasthan keeps Ramdevra as one of its two great pilgrimages; Gujarat and Sindh keep the same saint as Ramapir or Ramsha Pir and the Gujarati Ramdevpir temples send their own jatheras, and Muslim households of western Rajasthan keep him with the Hindu ones. The Dwitiya of every bright fortnight is his day at the shrine and not only this one.

The dates above are the Rajasthan reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Fixing a day for it

The muhurtham rules that go with this festival

Yatra, setting out on a journey. The classical rule is by direction: Sukra and the Yogini of the day sit in the direction not to be travelled, and a disagreeable direction is answered with a token journey a day earlier. That is not computed here. The weekday folklore differs from place to place, so only Sevvai and Sani are marked weak. The windows below are the daylight stretches with a movable or dual sign rising, outside Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika kaal.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
