What Udaya is

Udaya computes a Hindu almanac: the panchangam, the regional calendars, festival dates, auspicious timings, birth charts and the traditional compatibility calculations. It is free to use, needs no account for any of that, and runs in your browser.

By using it you accept what is on this page. If you do not, the remedy is simple and complete: close the tab. Nothing has been collected.

What an almanac can tell you, and what it cannot#

The astronomy here is real and is measured. Planetary positions come from published theories and are checked against the Swiss Ephemeris; the panchangam, the sunrise times and the festival dates follow from those positions by stated rules, and the rule behind every date is printed beside it so you can see which convention produced it.

The interpretation is a different kind of thing. Dashas, poruthams, doshas, muhurtham grades and remedies are a tradition, faithfully computed. They are offered as that tradition states them, not as predictions of what will happen to you.

Nothing here is medical, legal, financial or psychological advice. Do not delay treatment, make an investment, or decide a marriage on the strength of a page on this site. Where two almanacs honestly disagree — and on the Tamil month they routinely do — this app says so and lets you choose, rather than quietly picking one. Your family's own astrologer and your own judgement come first.

Accuracy, and what to do when it is wrong#

The calculations are tested hard, and they will still sometimes differ from the calendar on your wall. Usually that is a difference of convention rather than an error, and the rule printed beside the date will show which. Sometimes it is a genuine mistake.

Either way we want to hear it. Every festival and temple page has a way to send a correction, without an account. A correction from someone who keeps the observance is worth more than any test we could write.

That said, the service is provided as it is, with no warranty. We do not promise it will be available, or correct for every place and every year, and we are not liable for what you decide on the basis of it.

Your account, if you make one#

An account is optional and exists only to sync your own saved horoscopes and reminders between your devices. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what is done through your account. You can export everything it holds, and delete it outright, from the account page.

We may close an account that is being used to attack the service or to harass other people through the question board. That is the only reason we would.

What is asked of you#

  • Do not use the question board to abuse, threaten or impersonate anyone.
  • Do not post another person's birth details, or anything else private to them, without their agreement.
  • Do not attack the service, or try to reach data belonging to other people.
  • Scraping the site at a rate that degrades it for others is not welcome. If you want the data, ask — much of it is computed and could simply be explained to you.

What you write here#

A question, an answer or a correction you send stays yours. By posting it you allow us to show it on the site for the purpose you posted it for — a public question publicly, a private one to the astrologer answering it. You can delete your own questions and answers.

The almanac's own text, its explanations and its code are ours. The astronomical facts it computes are nobody's.

Complaints, and the officer who answers them#

Udaya carries things people contribute — matrimony profiles, questions and answers, temple notes and photographs, corrections. That makes it an intermediary under India's Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which require a grievance officer to be named and reachable. Ours is:

Kubi
Grievance Officer, Udaya
grievance@udaya.app

Write there about anything on this site that you believe should not be here. The clock the Rules set, which we keep to:

  • 24 hours to acknowledge a complaint.
  • 15 days to act on it and tell you what was done.
  • 36 hours to remove content on a valid order or a complaint about unlawful material.
  • 24 hours to remove an image of a person shared without consent, which is the shorter clock the Rules set for it.

A matrimony profile, a photograph or a message can also be reported from the page it is on, which puts it straight into the moderation queue — that is faster than writing, and it is the better route for an ordinary problem. The officer is for a complaint the queue did not settle, and for anything legal.

The name above is the office rather than a person. Before this service carries contributions from the public at scale, a named individual has to stand behind it, with a postal address — that is what the Rules ask for, and a role address alone is the minimum rather than the whole duty.

Changes and contact#

These terms will change as the service does, and the date at the top says when they last did. Questions about them go to hello@udaya.app. Anything about your personal data is on the privacy page, which is the more useful of the two.

Written to describe this service plainly rather than to cover every eventuality. If you are operating it commercially, have it reviewed by a lawyer.
