Amavasai: The new moon, the thirtieth tithi. The day of tarpanam for the ancestors, and the day Deepavali’s lamps are lit. How it is worked out
Ashta Koota: The North Indian guna milan: eight checks out of 36 points. 18 is the usual minimum, 25 and above good, 33 and above excellent. How it is worked out
Ayanamsa: The angle between the western (tropical) zodiac and the Indian (sidereal) one, about 24° today. It is subtracted from every position before the chart is drawn. How it is worked out
Bhukti: A sub-period inside a mahadasha, also called antardasha. Each mahadasha holds nine, in the same order, each in proportion to its lord’s years. How it is worked out
Dasha: A planetary period: the stretch of life ruled by one graha. "Running Budhan" means the Budhan period is on now. How it is worked out
Ekadasi: The eleventh tithi, Vishnu’s fasting day, kept twice a month. Vaikuntha Ekadasi is the Margazhi Shukla one. How it is worked out
Gochara: Transit: where the grahas are today, read against the birth Moon. Guru, Sani and Rahu move slowly and matter most. How it is worked out
Kala sarpa dosham: All seven grahas on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Noted for the astrologer; not a matching criterion on this site. How it is worked out
Karana: Half a tithi, 6° of the Moon’s gain on the Sun. Eleven names fill sixty slots a month; Vishti is the one to avoid. How it is worked out
Kollam era: The Malayalam year, Kollavarsham, beginning on Chingam 1 in August: the Common Era year minus 824 from that day. How it is worked out
Lagna: The rasi rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It fixes the first house, so every house is counted from it. How it is worked out
Muhurtham: An auspicious time chosen for a beginning: the wedding hour above all. Graded by month, weekday, tithi, star, karana and the rising sign. How it is worked out
Nadi dosha: Both people’s stars in the same nadi, aadi, madhya or antya. Scores 0 in Ashta Koota and is often a rejection in the north; exceptions exist. How it is worked out
Nakshatra: One of the twenty-seven stars, each 13°20′ of the zodiac. The birth star is the one the Moon was in at birth. How it is worked out
Nalla neram: The two good windows the Tamil almanac prints for the day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each up to ninety minutes. How it is worked out
Navamsa: The ninth divisional chart, D9: every sign cut into nine parts of 3°20′. Read for marriage and for how strong a graha really is. How it is worked out
Porutham: A match: one of the ten checks a Tamil family makes between two birth stars, each graded full, partial or none. How it is worked out
Pournami: The full moon, the fifteenth tithi. Satyanarayana puja, Guru Purnima and many observances fall on it. How it is worked out
Pradosham: The Trayodasi running at sunset in each fortnight, kept for Siva. Sani pradosham when it falls on a Saturday. How it is worked out
Rahu kaal: One eighth of the daylight, about ninety minutes, avoided for starting anything: the 8th part on Sunday, 2nd Monday, 7th Tuesday, 5th Wednesday, 6th Thursday, 4th Friday, 3rd Saturday. How it is worked out
Rajju dosham: Both stars in the same rajju group. The strongest objection in Tamil matching and one of the two that end the reading on their own. How it is worked out
Sade sati: The seven and a half years in which Sani transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the birth Moon: about two and a half years in each. How it is worked out
Saka era: The Shalivahana Saka year, the Common Era year minus 78 from Ugadi onwards. The Indian national calendar counts in it. How it is worked out
Samvatsara: One of the sixty named years of the Jovian cycle, Prabhava to Akshaya. 2025 to 2026 is Visuvavasu, then Parabhava. How it is worked out
Sankranti: The Sun’s entry into a new sidereal sign, twelve times a year. Makara Sankranti is Pongal; the Mesha one is the solar new year. How it is worked out
Sevvai dosham: Sevvai in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the lagna, the Moon or Sukran. The marriage dosham most often asked about; cancelled by many placements. How it is worked out
Tithi: The lunar day: each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun. Thirty fill a lunar month, fifteen in each fortnight. How it is worked out
Vikram Samvat: The North Indian era, the Common Era year plus 57 from Chaitra Shukla Prathamai. Gujarat starts its year after Diwali instead. How it is worked out
Vratam: A vow kept by a fast or an observance, most of them coming round every lunar month: Ekadasi, Pradosham, Sashti. How it is worked out
Yoga (panchangam): The third limb: the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes in steps of 13°20′, twenty-seven in all from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti. How it is worked out
