The short version

Every chart, every date and every timing on this site is worked out by your own browser, on your own device. Opening a page sends no personal information anywhere. There is no advertising on this site, no analytics, and no third-party tracking code of any kind.

What you save — horoscopes, places, preferences, notes — is kept in your browser's own storage. It stays on that device and is not uploaded, unless you create an account and turn on sync, which is off until you ask for it.

What stays on your device#

Unless you sign in, all of the following is held only in your browser's storage and never leaves it:

  • Saved horoscopes: the name, date, time and place of birth you enter for each person.
  • The place the almanac pages use, and the time zone that goes with it.
  • Your language and script choice, the chart style, the ayanamsa and the other computation settings.
  • Anything you mark as kept — vratams you follow, notes you attach to a date.

Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it, permanently, and there is no copy anywhere else for us to restore from. That is the trade: nothing to leak, and nothing to recover.

What reaches a server, and only if you ask#

The optional account exists so that saved horoscopes and reminders can follow you between a phone and a computer. Everything in this section happens only after you create one.

Your account
An email address, and a password which is stored only as a hash — it cannot be read back, by us or by anyone who obtained the database.
Synced horoscopes
The same names, birth dates, birth times and birth places listed above, copied to the server so another device can read them. This is the most sensitive data here and it is treated as such: the server's access rules allow each record to be read, changed or deleted only by the account that owns it.
Reminder settings
Which alerts you want and for which place.
Push subscriptions
Only if you allow notifications. This is an address issued by your browser's push service, not by us, and it lets the server send a notification to that browser and nothing else. Turning notifications off deletes it.
Questions and answers
Only if you use the question board. A question marked public is visible to anyone; a private one is visible to you and to an astrologer answering it. Whichever you choose is shown on the question itself before you post.
Your matrimony profile
Only if you put one up. This is the one thing here that is kept so that other members can read it: the name you choose, the date, time and place of birth, the birth star worked out from them, the height, marital status, education, profession and town, and the two paragraphs you write. An admin reads it before anybody else can; after that, every signed-in member can. No search engine ever holds it — the server allows no reading of any profile without an account, and the matrimony pages are kept out of the sitemap. There is no field for a telephone number or an email address on a profile, deliberately, so a profile is no way to contact anybody. You can hide it from members at any time, or delete it; erasing the account deletes it with everything else.
Corrections and feedback
If you tell us a date or a temple timing is wrong, we keep what you sent so it can be checked. A contact address is optional and is used only to reply to you about that correction.

Logs#

The web server keeps an access log, as every web server does, so that we can see what is being read and what is failing. Two things are removed before anything is written.

A shared horoscope link carries the person's name, birth date, birth time and birth coordinates in the address itself. Those are deleted from the recorded address, so opening a link somebody sent you does not write their birth details into a log. Your IP address is shortened before it is stored, to the block it belongs to rather than the address itself, which is enough to know roughly where traffic comes from and not enough to identify a household.

Where it is kept, and for how long#

The server is in Germany, at Hetzner in Falkenstein. Email for the domain is handled on that same machine rather than by an outside provider, so a password reset does not pass through a third party.

Account data is kept until you delete it. Backups are taken nightly and kept for a fortnight, with a weekly copy for two months beyond that — so a deletion takes up to about ten weeks to pass out of every backup. Access logs are kept for a short period for operational purposes only.

Your rights#

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and under the GDPR if you are in Europe, you may ask to see the personal data held about you, to have it corrected, and to have it erased.

For most people none of that requires asking anybody: if you have no account there is nothing held, and if you have one, the account page can export everything it holds and delete the account outright. Where you would rather ask a person, write to privacy@udaya.app. If you are unhappy with the answer you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Complaints, and the officer who answers them#

Two addresses, for two different things, and it is worth knowing which is which:

  • privacy@udaya.app — your own data: seeing it, correcting it, erasing it. That is the section above.
  • grievance@udaya.app — the Grievance Officer, Udaya. Anything on this site that you believe should not be here: somebody else's matrimony profile, a photograph of you posted by another person, a message, a temple note, an answer on the board.

The second exists because Udaya carries what people contribute, which makes it an intermediary under India's IT Rules, 2021. A complaint there is acknowledged within 24 hours and acted on within 15 days; unlawful material comes down within 36 hours, and an image of a person shared without their consent within 24. The same clock is written out on the terms page.

A matrimony profile, a photograph or a message can also be reported from the page it is on, which is faster and is the better route for an ordinary problem.

Children#

A horoscope is often cast for a newborn, so birth details of a child are one of the ordinary things people enter here. On a device with no account, that information never leaves the device. An account is for an adult to hold; please do not create one for a child.

Changes, and how to check them#

This page will change when the app does. It carries the date it was last updated, at the top. A material change to what is collected will be said plainly here rather than buried in a revision.

This page describes the app accurately and is not a substitute for legal advice. If you are operating this service commercially, have it reviewed by a lawyer familiar with the DPDP Act.
