Help
The things we are asked most. If the answer is not here, write to us and one person will read it.
Dates and times
- Your date for a festival differs from my calendar. Which is right?
Very often both. A festival falls on the day a tithi is current at a particular moment, and the two main reckonings — Vakya and Thirukanitha — can place that moment on either side of a midnight. Temples, towns and households follow different ones, and a printed calendar rarely says which it used.
- Why does the day here start at sunrise rather than midnight?
Because that is what a panchangam's day is. The eight parts of the day, Rahu kaal and the rest are all cut from sunrise to the next sunrise, so a time after midnight still belongs to the previous day. It is why 01:30 can show yesterday's nakshatra and why that is not a bug.
- The times are wrong for where I am.
Every window is computed for the place you set, not a national average, so the first thing to check is the place in the header. Sunrise in Coimbatore is not sunrise in Kolkata, and the eighths of the day are cut from it.
Charts and matching
- I do not know the exact birth time. Can I still use this?
Yes, for most of it. The nakshatra, the rasi and the poruthams that rest on them need the Moon, which moves about one degree in two hours, so an hour's uncertainty rarely changes them. The lagna changes every two hours and is the one that will be wrong. Every page says when a placement is close enough to a boundary for the clock to decide it, rather than printing a clean answer it cannot support.
- Your porutham count differs from the one the astrologer gave us.
Almost certainly a different reckoning or a different count. There are ten poruthams in the Tamil tradition and thirty-six Kuta points in the north, and they disagree by design. The page shows which it used and lets you change it; it does not pick one and call it the answer.
The matrimony service
- Is it free?
Yes, all of it. There is no paid tier, nothing is held back, and in particular there is no charge to see who looked at your profile — which is the thing most matrimony sites charge for.
- How long does verification take?
It is not a queue you wait in: you ring us, and the profile goes live the same day if the details check out. Nothing is verified until somebody has spoken to the family on the telephone, and the server refuses to mark a profile verified before that call is recorded.
- My parent made the profile. Can I control it?
Yes, if your own email address is on it. Whoever writes a profile for somebody else is asked for that person's address, and an account with it can read, change, hide and delete the profile without going through them.
Your data
- What leaves my device?
For the almanac, the charts and the poruthams: nothing. They are computed here from an ephemeris that ships with the app. The parts that use a server are the matrimony service, the question board and sittings with an astrologer, because those involve other people by definition.
- Do you send email or notifications?
Almost never. Nothing is emailed about matrimony activity — no "somebody looked at your profile" — and there is no newsletter. You get an acknowledgement if you write to us, a reminder if you switch one on yourself, and nothing else.
- How do I delete everything?
The account page erases the account and everything the server holds for it, in one step and without being asked twice. Deleting a matrimony profile is separate, on its own settings page, because a family may want to stop looking without losing their saved horoscopes.
Still stuck
Write to us for anything about the site itself. The board is for a question about a chart or a date, where an astrologer answers and everybody can read it, and an astrologer will sit with you privately if you would rather. The glossary explains the words.
