Mantras 131 mantras, slokas and hymns a family says: the nine graha mantras, the slokas for each deity, the opening verses of the Tamil hymns, the short prayers of the day, and the Sikh and Buddhist refuges the festival days name. Each in Devanagari, Tamil and IAST, with its meaning, when it is said, a voice to read it and a counter for japa.
The reader’s own script first. Sanskrit is read aloud by a Hindi voice, the one that pronounces it best; the Tamil button reads the Tamil script the way most Tamil homes say it.

A mala has 108 beads and one more, the meru, which is not counted and not crossed: at the end of a round the mala is turned and the count goes back the other way.
Sit facing east or north, on a mat rather than the bare floor, at the same hour each day if you can. Steadiness counts for more than the number.
The Vedic mantras here (the Gayatri, the Mahamrityunjaya, Sri Rudram, Sri Suktam, the Svasti and Varuna verses, the Ganapati Atharvashirsha and the Upanishad shanti mantras) carry accents that are not written on this page; they are learned from a teacher. The Gayatri is traditionally given at the upanayanam.
The graha mantras are said on the graha’s own day. A full anushthana, thousands of repetitions over forty days, is taken up on the advice of the family astrologer or priest, not on a table alone.
The Tamil hymns are sung, and each has its own pann (melody); the read-aloud voice only gives the words.
Mantras are prayer and practice, offered for devotion and peace of mind. None of them is a cure for any illness, and nothing here replaces medical, legal or financial advice.
