Udaya

Name against a star A name has been given by the family, and what the household wants to know is which birth star and pada it belongs to — and whether it is the child's. Type the name in English letters or in its own script.

Namakarana fixes only the first syllable of a name, from the pada of the Moon at birth. Everything else — the meaning, the family name, the deity — is the family's own, and the family astrologer settles it. The other direction, from a star to the names that begin with its syllable, is on the Baby names page.

The names come from the same curated table the Baby names page prints, with each name's spelling in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Devanagari, so a name typed in any of them is found under its own orthography rather than transliterated first. The 27 stars give 108 pada slots but only 93 distinct syllables, which is why a name can honestly belong to more than one star.
