The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is

The tenth day of Besya, the day the ritual season of Tulu Nadu ends. From this morning no jatre, nema, kola, tambila, Yakshagana, kambala or wedding is held until the rains have gone: the Yakshagana troupes take off the costume and the Bhuta impersonators untie the gaggara, the ankle bells, and both are put away. The season that closes here opened in Jaarde, at the start of the dry half of the year, and the ten days are counted from the sankranti that ended Paggu. The agel and the kali are offered to Guliga and to Bhairava, and the proverb for the day says that ten drops of rain fall on Pattanaje.

The hour

Clock times for Tuesday, 25 May 2027 at Chennai

Besya 10, the tenth day of the second Tulu month, counted from the sankranti that closes Paggu; it falls on 24 or 25 May.

This day carries no instant that can be put on a clock: it is fixed by the tithi or the nakshatra running at sunrise, or by a moonrise the app does not compute. The rule above is the whole of it.

The fast

No fast is kept. The agel, the leaf plate of rice and curry, is offered at the daivasthana, and the household meal is an ordinary one.

Where the regions differ

Tulu Nadu alone keeps it, in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod; the Malayalam Edavam 10 can fall a day earlier, because Kerala gives the sankranti day to the incoming month.

The dates above are the Tulu Nadu reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
