The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The first festival of the Chhattisgarhi year, and a farmer's day entirely. The sowing is finished by it, so the plough and all the iron of the field are washed, stood in the courtyard and honoured there, and the gurhaua chila, a pancake of rice flour and jaggery, is offered to them and to the bullocks before anybody in the house eats one. The village lohar brings a nail to every door, and a branch of bhelwa or a bunch of neem leaves is fixed above it and at the cattle shed, to keep disease off the house and the herd through the monsoon. The children are given the gedi, stilts of bamboo, and walk the village on them from this day until Pola.

The hour

Clock times for Monday, 2 August 2027 at Chennai

Shravana Amavasya at sunrise in the purnimanta reckoning the region keeps, which an amanta almanac calls the Ashadha Amavasya. It falls before the Shravana full moon and not after it.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise05:55the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 05:55, sunset 18:36, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast is kept. The chila is the whole eating of the day, offered first to the plough and the bullocks and then eaten by the house.

Where the regions differ

Chhattisgarh keeps it as its own and gazettes it, and the Chhattisgarhi districts of Odisha and Madhya Pradesh keep it with them. The north keeps the same new moon as Hariyali Amavasya and plants a tree on it, and the Tulu coast keeps it as Aati Amavasye with the medicinal kashaya.

The dates above are the Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
