The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is

The eighteen days in which the women of Rajasthan worship Gauri as a married woman worships her own good fortune, and the only festival of the state that belongs to them entirely. Isar and Gavar, Shiva and Parvati, are made in clay on the morning after the Holika Dahan, with the ash of the fire mixed into the earth, and are worshipped every morning after that with a pot of water carried on the head and a song that every girl learns before she can read. Unmarried girls keep the days for the husband they will get and married women for the one they have, and on the last afternoon the images are dressed, carried through the streets and taken to the water.

The hour

Clock times for Friday, 9 April 2027 at Chennai

Chaitra Shukla Tritiya at sunrise is the eighteenth and closing day; the daily puja is of the early morning, and the procession and the immersion belong to the afternoon and the evening.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise06:00the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 06:00, sunset 18:21, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

Many women eat once a day through the eighteen days and a good number fast outright on the Tritiya, breaking it only after the images have been taken to the water. There is no rule about it that holds across the state, and a household follows its own.

Where the regions differ

Rajasthan keeps it as its own festival, with Jaipur and Udaipur making processions of it and Jodhpur keeping the Dhinga Gavar of its own besides; Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh keep the same tithi for Gauri in a quieter way, and the south keeps nothing of it.

The dates above are the Rajasthan reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
