Who this is
Ganesha is worshipped before anybody else, including before the deity whose temple one has come to, and that precedence is the whole of his character. He is Vighnaharta, who takes obstacles away, and Vighnakarta, who puts them there, because the same power does both and a tradition that wanted only the first would be asking for half a god. He is the scribe of the Mahabharata, which Vyasa dictated and he wrote without pausing, breaking off his own tusk when the pen failed. In Tamil Nadu he is Pillaiyar, the noble child, and a lump of turmeric shaped by hand under a tree is as much him as a bronze in a sanctum.
How to recognise them
An elephant head on a short heavy body, one tusk broken, a large belly and four arms, usually with the noose, the goad, a broken tusk and a bowl of modakam. The trunk most often curves to his left, and a right-curving trunk, the valampuri, is held to be stricter and is given a shrine of its own. The mouse at his feet is his vehicle, which is the joke and the point: the largest head and the smallest mount.
Family and companions
Son of Siva and Parvati, elder or younger brother of Murugan depending on who is telling it. The north gives him two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi, and two sons, Shubha and Labha; the Tamil country keeps him a bachelor, which is why a Tamil wedding invitation is placed at his feet and a north Indian one at Lakshmi and Ganesha together.
How they are worshipped
Chaturthi in both fortnights; Friday and Tuesday in some houses.
He is invoked at the start of every rite, every journey, every account book and every other god's puja, with the arugampul that belongs to him and twenty one of whatever is offered. The gesture of holding the ears and doing thoppukaranam, the small squat with arms crossed, is his alone. Chaturthi is his tithi, in both fortnights, and the bright one is for beginning and the dark one for getting past something.
The stories
As they are told, with the disagreements left in
How he came by the head
Parvati made him from the turmeric of her own body and set him to guard her door while she bathed. Siva returned and was refused entry by a boy he had never seen, and in the quarrel the head was struck off. When Parvati would not be comforted, Siva sent the ganas to bring the head of the first creature they found lying with its head to the north, and they brought an elephant. The story is told as a child's tale and read by the tradition as a teaching: what is made of the mother's own substance cannot be destroyed, only changed.
The tusk and the Mahabharata
Vyasa needed a scribe who could keep pace with the whole epic, and Ganesha agreed on one condition: that the dictation never pause. Vyasa agreed on a counter condition, that nothing be written down before it was understood, and so composed difficult verses whenever he needed to rest. Partway through, the pen broke; rather than stop, Ganesha snapped off his own right tusk and wrote on with that. Every image of him since carries the broken tusk, and it is held up as what it costs to finish what was begun.
The race round the world
Siva offered a fruit to whichever son first went round the world. Murugan left at once on his peacock. Ganesha walked once round his parents and sat down, saying that they were the world and he had gone round it. In the Tamil telling Murugan returned to find the fruit already given, took offence and left for Palani, where he stands as an ascetic with nothing but a loincloth and a staff. The Tamil country therefore has both a god who is clever and a god who is proud, and six hills to visit on account of the second.
