What the day is
The one day of the year on which Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are brought out of the Srimandira at Puri to the open Snana Bedi and publicly bathed, with a hundred and eight pots of water drawn from the Suna Kua inside the temple. After the bath they are dressed in the Hati Besha, the elephant form, and then go into Anasara, the fortnight of seclusion in which they are held to be feverish from the bathing, are treated with dasamula medicine, and are not shown to anyone at all. The Nabajoubana Darshan, the first sight of them renewed, comes on the eve of the Rath Jatra.

The hour
Clock times for Friday, 18 June 2027 at Chennai
Jyestha Purnima, the full-moon tithi running at sunrise. The pahandi procession to the Snana Bedi begins before dawn and the bathing runs through the forenoon.
| Instant | Time | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Arunodaya | 04:07 | the 96 minutes before sunrise, the hour of the oil bath |
| Sunrise | 05:43 | the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up |
| Purvahna | 09:35 | the forenoon, three tenths of the daylight after sunrise |
Sunrise 05:43, sunset 18:37, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.
The fast
No fast is kept. The temple's own mahaprasad is distributed, and this is the last day of it before the Anasara closes the kitchen rites to the public.
Where the regions differ
Puri keeps the great one, and every Jagannath temple in Odisha, in Bengal at Mahesh and in Gujarat at Ahmedabad keeps its own snana on the same full moon. Elsewhere in India the same Purnima is Vat Purnima in Maharashtra and the Jyeshtha Purnima bathing day at the northern ghats.
The dates above are the Odisha reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.
Where this day is kept

The entry for this day names Puri, and it is a temple of Jagannath. The one day of the year on which Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are brought out of the Srimandira at Puri to the open Snana Bedi and publicly bathed, with a hundred and eight pots of water drawn from the Suna Kua inside the temple.
A temple is listed here only where the gazetteer's own line names this day, or where this day's own entry names the town, or where the day belongs to the ancestors or the nagas and the temple is recorded for that rite. Where neither table says anything, nothing is listed. Your family's own temple comes first, and its calendar is the one that decides.
Fixing a day for it
The muhurtham rules that go with this festival
A temple visit, or the first darshan at a new temple. No weekday is ruled out: Tuesday belongs to Murugan and the Amman, Saturday to Perumal and Sani, so the day usually follows the deity rather than the almanac. Ashtami and Chaturdasi are the two tithis held back for darshan, with the standing exceptions of Sivaratri on Krishna Chaturdasi and Kala Bhairava Ashtami, which are kept on those very days. Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika kaal are not scored here; the panchangam page prints them for the day you pick, and most families simply wait them out.
Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
