The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is

The Meitei new year, and the day the Manipuri calendar turns. The house is cleaned to the corners the day before; the new year’s meal is cooked by the senior woman of the house and offered first at the south-west corner to Lainingthou Sanamahi, the household deity who was there before the Vaishnava gods and is there still. In the evening every family climbs the nearest hill, so that the year ahead will rise as they have risen.

The hour

Clock times for Wednesday, 7 April 2027 at Chennai

Sajibu Shukla Pratipada at sunrise, which is the same new moon Ugadi and Gudi Padwa open on; when the tithi begins and ends between two sunrises the day it ran on is taken.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise06:02the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 06:02, sunset 18:21, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast. The meal is the point of the day: a vegetarian feast laid on plantain leaf, with the first share set aside for the deity and the second for the neighbours.

Where the regions differ

The Deccan keeps the same morning as Ugadi and Maharashtra as Gudi Padwa, so three new years fall on one new moon; what Manipur adds is the hill climb at dusk, which nobody else does.

The dates above are the Manipur reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
