The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is
The new moon of the purnimanta Pausha, kept for the Yakshas, the house spirits, with khechri of rice and moong. The khechri is cooked with the walnut oil or ghee of the house, and bowls of it are set at the threshold, in the attic, by the water and at the corners of the compound, so that the spirits of the place eat before the household does. The house is not swept that night and nothing is thrown out, because what has been offered is still there. It is the deepest of the Kashmiri winter days and falls in December in most years.

- Yakshas, Kubera
- Kind
- Festival Days of celebration: the house is decorated, a feast is cooked and the temple is visited.
The hour
Clock times for Thursday, 7 January 2027 at Chennai
The Amavasya that closes the dark fortnight of the purnimanta Pausha, at sunrise. The December new moon, not the January one that an amanta Pausha would give.
| Instant | Time | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrise | 06:33 | the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up |
Sunrise 06:33, sunset 17:57, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.
The fast
No fast is kept. Khechri of rice and moong dal is the whole food of the day, and some of it is always given away before any of it is eaten.
Where the regions differ
Kashmiri Pandits keep it as Kheche Maavus and Yakshamavasya; no other tradition keeps the Pausha new moon for the house spirits.
The dates above are the Kashmir reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.
Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
