Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The days in which Bhumi Appe, the mother earth, is held to be in her courses, and nothing may be done to the ground. No one digs, ploughs, cuts or breaks the earth for three days, and in Brahmin houses for four, because she is resting and must not be disturbed. The earth is treated as a woman of the house would be: bathed, dressed, given the food of the season, and left alone. The days are called Suruta, Nadu and Kadeta Keddasa, the first, the middle and the last, and the wind that turns the cold of Ponni into the warmth of Maayi is called the Keddasa wind.

The hour

Clock times for Wednesday, 10 February 2027 at Chennai

From Ponni 27 to the last day of Ponni, which is the Sankramana day of Kumbha: three days when Ponni has twenty nine, four when it has thirty. The first day falls on 10 February in most years.

This day carries no instant that can be put on a clock: it is fixed by the tithi or the nakshatra running at sunrise, or by a moonrise the app does not compute. The rule above is the whole of it.

The fast

No fast is kept. The nendrabale banana, the bende and the bitter greens are cooked, and in many houses the chicken or fish of the first day is the only meat of the three.

Where the regions differ

Tulu Nadu alone keeps it, with the Bhuta and the Naga shrines closed to digging as well; the nearest thing elsewhere is the Ambubachi of Kamakhya in Assam, which is the same idea at a different season.

The dates above are the Tulu Nadu reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

11 more temples in this gazetteer are recorded for the day. Find temples near you.

A temple is listed here only where the gazetteer's own line names this day, or where this day's own entry names the town, or where the day belongs to the ancestors or the nagas and the temple is recorded for that rite. Where neither table says anything, nothing is listed. Your family's own temple comes first, and its calendar is the one that decides.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
