The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The Magha full moon, kept by calling the crow to the roof and feeding it. A cone of birch bark or of grass is made, filled with cooked rice and a little of whatever else the house has eaten, fixed to a long stick and held up from the roof or the window while the children call kaawa kaawa, come and take the year's share. The crow is the messenger of the ancestors and of the year itself, and what it carries off is held to be carried away for good. Kaw is the crow and punim the full moon, and the day belongs to the children of the house more than to anyone else.

The hour

Clock times for Saturday, 20 February 2027 at Chennai

Maagh Purnima at sunrise, the full moon that closes the purnimanta Magha; the crow is called at first light.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise06:30the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 06:30, sunset 18:16, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast is kept. Rice with a little salt and oil is what the cone is filled with, and the family eats the rest of it after the crow has come.

Where the regions differ

Kashmiri Pandits keep it as Kaw Punim; the Magha full moon is kept elsewhere as Maghi Purnima, a bathing day, with nothing of the crow in it.

The dates above are the Kashmir reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

26 more temples in this gazetteer are recorded for the day. Find temples near you.

A temple is listed here only where the gazetteer's own line names this day, or where this day's own entry names the town, or where the day belongs to the ancestors or the nagas and the temple is recorded for that rite. Where neither table says anything, nothing is listed. Your family's own temple comes first, and its calendar is the one that decides.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
