The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is
Five days kept by the unmarried girls of Gujarat for Parvati, who won Shiva by her own austerity, and by young wives for the husband's long life. Wheat or javara is sown in a small clay bowl on the first morning and watered each day until it sprouts, and the vrat is kept without salt, and in the strictest form without grain, for the whole five days. The last night is the jagaran: the girls stay awake singing the garba and the vrat songs, and at dawn the javara is taken to the river or the tank and given to the water.

The hour
Clock times for Friday, 16 July 2027 at Chennai
It begins on Ashadh sud Teras, the tithi running at sunrise, and runs five days to the jagaran on the last night; the javara is immersed the next morning.
| Instant | Time | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrise | 05:50 | the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up |
Sunrise 05:50, sunset 18:40, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.
The fast
No salt for the five days, and in the strict form no grain either: fruit, milk and the saltless rotla. The fast is broken after the javara is given to the water.
Where the regions differ
Gujarat keeps it as Jaya Parvati; Uttar Pradesh and Bihar keep a related vrat as Gauri Vrat or Vijaya Parvati in the same fortnight, and the Gujarati girls' Gauri Vrat of Ashadh sud Agiyaras to Punam is kept beside it, so traditions vary over how many days each name covers.
The dates above are the Gujarat reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.
Fixing a day for it
The muhurtham rules that go with this festival
Vivaha, the marriage itself. The grading is the Tamil almanac one: nine wedding months, the seven wedding tithis, the marriage stars, and Mithunam, Kanni and Thulam as the best lagnas. Tuesday and Saturday rule a day out, as no Tamil almanac prints a wedding muhurtham on either. Confirm the chosen day and hour with the family astrologer.
Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
