The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is
The forty days of austerity and thanksgiving kept for Jhulelal, named from the Sindhi chaliha, forty. They repeat the forty days the Hindus of Sindh are held to have kept on the bank of the Indus when they were given forty days to convert. A household that keeps the Chaliho lights a jyot before Jhulelal on the first morning and does not let it go out for the forty days, eats once a day, cuts no hair, does not shave and wears nothing new, and sings the Jhulelal panjras at the darbar in the evening.

The hour
Clock times for Friday, 16 July 2027 at Chennai
The forty days from 16 July to 24 August inclusive, which is sixteen days of July and twenty-four of August and so exactly forty. They are kept on the Gregorian dates and not on a tithi, which is unusual on this calendar and is what the Sindhi panchayats print; some families reckon the forty from the lunar month instead.
This day carries no instant that can be put on a clock: it is fixed by the tithi or the nakshatra running at sunrise, or by a moonrise the app does not compute. The rule above is the whole of it.
The fast
One plain meal a day in the houses that keep it strictly, without onion or garlic, and the rest of the day without food. The fortieth day is broken on the prasad of the Behrana Sahib and the langar at the darbar.
Where the regions differ
Kept hardest in Ulhasnagar and at the Sindhi darbars of Ajmer, Jaipur, Bhopal and Indore, where the jyot burns at the darbar for whoever cannot keep one at home. The forty days fall inside the chaturmas, so no wedding is held in them in any case.
The dates above are the Sindhi reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.
Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
