What sade sati is, and is not
Saturn crossing the three signs around your natal Moon, and the difference between a date that can be checked and a meaning that is a tradition.

The short answer
Sade sati is a position, not an event. It is running whenever Saturn stands in one of the three signs around the sign your Moon occupied at birth: the sign before it, that sign itself, and the sign after it.
It is counted from the moon sign — the rasi — and not from the sun sign or the birth star day. If you know your rasi you can work out roughly when it falls without a chart at all.
The name means "the seven and a half", and that is what the arithmetic gives. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign and about twenty-nine and a half years to go round the whole zodiac. Three signs is a quarter of the circle, so it is about seven and a half years. Because a full circuit is about thirty years, each rasi meets it roughly once in a generation, and most people meet it two or three times in a life.
The three phases
The three signs are counted as houses from the rasi, whole sign by whole sign, with your own sign as the first.
Saturn in the 12th is called the rising phase. Saturn in your own sign, the 1st, is the peak. Saturn in the 2nd is the setting phase. The phases are simply the three signs in order, and nothing marks the transition between them except Saturn crossing a sign boundary.
Two shorter periods are read in the same spirit and are often confused with it. Saturn in the 8th from the rasi is Ashtama sani; Saturn in the 4th is Ardhashtama sani, sometimes called the half sade sati. Each lasts about two and a half years, and neither is sade sati.
What is actually computed
The dates, and only the dates. Saturn’s sidereal longitude is taken from the ephemeris, the ayanamsa is subtracted, and the sign is read off. A ten-day step across the range finds each interval where the sign changes, and the crossing inside that interval is then narrowed by bisection to under a second.
Those ingress instants are astronomy, and they can be checked against any other program. This engine is tested against the Swiss Ephemeris: over 546 instants spread across 1800 to 2200 the worst disagreement in a planetary longitude is 0.82 arc-seconds, and the instant the Sun enters a sidereal sign lands within 2.8 seconds. Saturn’s sign entries are the same arithmetic.
Running the app’s own scan over 1920 to 2050 for all twelve rasis gives the real spread rather than the textbook figure. A complete sade sati comes out between about 6.4 and 8.9 years, averaging about 7.7 across the 48 of them in that span; successive ones for the same rasi begin about 29 to 30 years apart. The variation is Saturn’s, not the model’s — its speed changes along its orbit — and it is also because the app measures from Saturn’s first entry into the twelfth sign to its last exit from the second, retrograde excursions included.
One more piece of real behaviour shows up in the dates. Saturn turns retrograde once in every sign and can slip back into the sign behind it for a few months before going forward again. The app marks such a phase and lets the neighbouring phases overlap for those months, because that is what happens in the sky. A program that prints three tidy non-overlapping blocks has smoothed something away.
Two limits are stated rather than hidden. The planetary tables hold for 1800 to 2050; past 2050 positions are extrapolated and the page says so. And which ayanamsa you choose moves every sign boundary a little, so a period can begin days earlier or later under a different one. This app uses Lahiri unless you change it, and it names the ayanamsa at the foot of the page.
What is not computed
What it means. Every word said about the character of a sade sati — that it is a period of responsibility, that the twelfth-house stretch is about outgoings and tiredness, that the second-house stretch asks for care with money and speech — is a tradition’s own description, reported.
That is a different kind of claim from the dates, and the two should not be read in the same tone because they are printed in the same typeface. The dates are checkable. The meaning is held.
It is worth being specific about what is not known. Nothing has shown that Saturn’s position relative to your birth Moon affects your health, your money, your job or your family. This app takes no position on whether the tradition is true, and it is not in a position to take one.
So there is no forecast here. Nothing on this site says what is coming, or when, or to whom. The classical advice for all three Saturn periods is the same and quite ordinary — keep commitments modest, look after health and sleep, be careful with money and with what you say, and finish what is already begun rather than starting something large. That is advice anyone could give about any seven years.
If you have been frightened by something you read
A great deal of what is written about sade sati online is written to sell something. The pattern is easy to recognise: a vivid description of misfortune, then a remedy with a price.
This site does not do that. The traditional parihaaram for Saturn — the Saturday observance, the Navagraha shrine, black sesame and til oil daanam, the Thirunallar visit — is listed for a chart alongside every other graha the chart calls on, and it is described as what the tradition prescribes, for devotion and peace of mind. It is not offered as a cure and nothing is for sale.
The honest use of the dates is small and real. They tell you a named period is running, and they tell you when it ends. If your family keeps the observance, you now know when to keep it. If you do not, you now know exactly what is being said when someone at a wedding mentions it, and you can hear it without having to agree with it.
The tool will print the dates for your rasi over any range of years, with the three phases named and Saturn’s sign for each, and it will show all twelve rasis on one time axis so you can see that everyone meets this in turn.
