Eight karakas (bring Rahu in)

Seven karakas is the older count — the Sun to Saturn, ranked by the degree each has gone into its sign. The eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu, counted as 30° less its own degree because it moves backwards, and inserts Pitrikaraka between Matrikaraka and Putrakaraka. Ketu never takes a karaka.
