The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The fourteenth of the bright fortnight of Magha, kept the day before Kaw Punim, and in Kashmiri Pandit houses the day the Yakshini is remembered. The food of the next morning is got ready on it, and in some families a lamp is lit at the window for the night. The jantri names the day and the houses that keep it do so quietly, without a fast and without a procession. It is the last of the Magha days before the full moon turns the year towards Herath.

The hour

Clock times for Saturday, 20 February 2027 at Chennai

Maagh Shukla Chaturdashi at sunrise, the day before the Magha full moon.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise06:30the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up

Sunrise 06:30, sunset 18:16, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast is kept. Rice is cooked and some of it set aside for the crow of the next morning.

Where the regions differ

Kashmiri Pandits keep it; the same tithi carries no name of its own elsewhere.

The dates above are the Kashmir reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
