The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The day the hearth is kept cold. Everything is cooked on the day before and nothing at all is heated on Thadri, not even the tea: the lolas, thick sweet wheat flatbreads fried in ghee with jaggery, the koki, the dal, the rice and the curd are all eaten as they are. Sitala Devi, who is asked for the pox and for the cooling of fevers, is offered the cold food first and is worshipped for the children of the house. It is the day before Janmashtami, so the cold Satam and the night fast of the Ashtami come together.

The hour

Sunrise 05:57, sunset 18:25, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast is kept, and the restriction is on the hearth rather than on the stomach: the whole day is eaten, and all of it cold. The lolas are made in quantity the day before and sent round to kin and neighbours.

Where the regions differ

Gujarat keeps the same tithi as Shitala Satam with the same cold kitchen, and Randhan Chhath the day before is the Gujarati name for the day of cooking. The Sindhi households of Ulhasnagar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Indore keep it, and the lola is the dish the day is remembered by.

The dates above are the Sindhi reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
