The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The children’s festival of the hills, and the day the Pahari spring is let into the house. The girls and the small children of the village go from door to door at first light with a thali of rice, jaggery, coconut and the first flowers after the snow, the yellow phyonli and the red buransh, scatter them on each threshold and sing phool dei, chhamma dei, daini dwar, bhar bhakar, flowers at your door and may your granary be full. They are given jaggery, rice, ghee and a coin at every house, and no child is sent away empty. The month it opens is the month of the bhitauli, when a brother carries grain, cloth and sweets to the sister who has been married away.

The hour

Clock times for Monday, 15 March 2027 at Chennai

The first day of the solar month of Chait, which is the gate day the Sun enters Meena, in the middle of March.

This day carries no instant that can be put on a clock: it is fixed by the tithi or the nakshatra running at sunrise, or by a moonrise the app does not compute. The rule above is the whole of it.

The fast

No fast. Saiy, the sweet pudding of rice flour and jaggery set in a leaf cup, is made for the children and sent back with them.

Where the regions differ

Kumaon keeps the one morning and parts of Garhwal keep the children’s round going for eight days or for the whole month of Chait. The Himachal hills keep the Meena sangrand quietly and have no Phool Dei of their own, which makes this one of the few days in this tradition that is Uttarakhand’s alone.

The dates above are the Himachal · Uttarakhand reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
