The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

Worked out for Chennai, Lahiri ayanamsa. A date is a function of the place: set yours above and the next three come back for where you are.

What the day is

The day the month of Ramzan ends and the month-long fast is broken, kept on 1 Shawwal. The Eid namaz is prayed in congregation in the morning, at the idgah or the large mosque, and the zakat al-fitr, a measure of food or its value, is given to the poor before the prayer so that everybody can eat that day. Families visit, embrace three times, and the sheer khurma of vermicelli, milk and dates is made in every house.

The hour

Clock times for Wednesday, 10 March 2027 at Chennai

The first sighting of the Shawwal crescent. The date this calendar prints is the TABULAR Islamic one, a thirty-year average of the lunar month, and the sighting committees in India can and do place the day one or two days from it; treat what is printed as an estimate.

This day carries no instant that can be put on a clock: it is fixed by the tithi or the nakshatra running at sunrise, or by a moonrise the app does not compute. The rule above is the whole of it.

The fast

The fast ends with this day. Fasting on Eid is forbidden, and the custom is to eat something sweet, usually dates, before leaving for the prayer.

Where the regions differ

Kept across India wherever there are Muslim families, with Kerala, Hyderabad, Lucknow and the Tamil coast keeping the largest congregations; the date can differ by a day between two towns, because each follows its own committee's sighting.

The dates above are the Tamil Nadu reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
