The date of a festival depends on the place: a tithi that ends at dusk in Chennai can still be running at dusk a thousand kilometres west, which moves the day. Sunrise and sunset here are computed for the place above.

What the day is

The stone fight of the Varahi Devi temple at Devidhura in Champawat, kept on the morning the rest of the country ties the rakhi. The four khams of Chamyal, Walik, Lamgaria and Gaharwal take the four sides of the temple court and throw at each other behind round shields of bhakar wood, and the priest stops it when he judges that blood to the measure of one man has been given. It stands in place of the human offering the goddess is said once to have taken, and the stones have in recent years largely been replaced by fruit and flowers on the administration’s order.

The hour

Clock times for Tuesday, 17 August 2027 at Chennai

Shravana Purnima at sunrise, which a purnimanta hill panchang prints as the full moon closing Savan. The Bagwal is fought in the forenoon, before the feast.

InstantTimeWhat it is
Sunrise05:57the udaya tithi, the tithi running as the sun comes up
Purvahna09:43the forenoon, three tenths of the daylight after sunrise

Sunrise 05:57, sunset 18:29, UTC+5.5. These are the instants the rule is read at, not the temple's own puja times, which every temple prints for itself.

The fast

No fast for the spectators. The khams prepare through the fortnight, and the day ends in a feast at the temple.

Where the regions differ

Kumaon’s own, and the one thing on this calendar kept on the Rakshabandhan morning that is not the thread or the rakhi. The word Bagwal means something else in Garhwal, where it is the name of Diwali itself, which is why the two entries on this calendar are keyed apart.

The dates above are the Himachal · Uttarakhand reckoning, because that is the calendar this key belongs to. Switch the tradition on the calendar page to see how another one dates the same day.

Every date here is computed from the Sun and Moon for the place entered, by the rule printed beside it. A printed panchangam can differ by a day where an almanac reads a tithi at a different instant, and a family's own custom always comes first. Where the practice genuinely varies, the text says so rather than choosing for you.
